On 30 July 1942 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the act establishing WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). During World War II, over 80,000 officer and enlisted women served in the WAVES.
This 1943 cartoon by Sixta, USNR, enititled “WAVES’ Anniversary” depicts events and activities in the first year following the 30 July 1942 authorization of the WAVES.
