On 19 July 1812, United States Frigate Constitution escaped from a British squadron after a three day chase off New Jersey, in the first weeks of the War of 1812.
This painting by Anton Otto Fischer depicts Constitution’s boats towing her in a calm, with the British squadron in hot pursuit. Courtesy of the U.S. Navy Art Collection, Washington, D.C. Gift of Katrina S. Fischer. NHHC Photograph Collection, NH 85543-KN.
